A recent Bored Panda article focused on the hidden meanings and images of different companies in different logo designs.
The article’s comments section was filled with messages from fans sharing their confusion and love for Pinterest’s logo choice.
One commented: “I always thought it was a needle and thread. Huh…”
Another commented, “Gee, and here I thought it was stylized text.”
Pinterest is an app designed for curators to group a bunch of photos, videos or gifs to display on a “pinboard”.
For example, when looking for inspiration for designing your new home, many users create boards for their followers to promote their creations.
One of the app’s founders, Evan Sharp, told Bessemer Venture Partners in 2019 that they want their supporters to feel “inspired” when they visit Pinterest.
“We have an ethical responsibility to create environments where people feel empowered, inspired and encouraged,” he said.
Creating the logo wasn’t as easy as it might seem.
The company has gone through many brand designs from the launch of the inspirational app.
In 2010, the company created a monochromatic blue and gray theme, but that quickly changed after they decided to keep the website’s look simple and minimalist.
A year later, they invented the iconic red color.
They added the sharp pin design and italic font to set their look apart from one of the most competitive apps also launched during this era, Instagram.
In 2016, Pinterest kept the look streamlined by updating the font to sans serif while keeping the pin design and dark red color.
In addition to Pinterest’s unique logo, many other brands have incorporated hidden meanings into their creations.
Ice cream company Baskin Robbins is known for creating 31 delicious flavors, and if you look closely, the logo has a “31” inside the B&R.
Cleverly designed logos are an important way to get customers to remember your brand.
Amazon is another company that used its name to include a whimsical symbol to represent the brand.
The logo has an arrow pointing from AZ to show its customers that they have every item from the alphabet on their website and the arrow also represents a smiley face.
