Olivia Wilde puts an end to Spitgate.
In a preview clip of Wednesday night’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the Don’t Worry Darling director defended boyfriend Harry Styles amid claims he spat on Chris Pine.
“He didn’t,” said Wilde, 38, laughing when Colbert asked.
“I think it’s a perfect example of people looking for drama wherever they can. Harry actually didn’t spit at Chris. He really hasn’t!”
Earlier this month, many speculated that the “Watermelon Sugar” singer, 28, spat on Pine, 42, afterwards a video who allegedly captured the moment at the Venice Film Festival went viral.
In the clip, the Grammy winner sat next to Pine, who was sitting next to Wilde. However, when the singer-turned-actor bent down to be seated, many said he spat on the actor, who froze in place before letting out a mischievous smile.
Although fans were convinced they saw saliva pouring out of Style’s mouth, Pine’s reps were quick to shut down the rumors.
“This is a ridiculous story – a complete fabrication and the result of a weird online illusion that is clearly deceptive and allows for silly speculation,” the rep told People.
“Just to be clear, Harry Styles did it Not spit on Chris Pine. There is nothing but respect between these two men, and any other suggestion is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist.”
Styles also addressed the rumors during a concert in New York City a few days later.
“This is our 10th show at Madison Square Garden. It’s wonderful, wonderful, wonderful to be back,” he said at the start of his performance “Love on Tour: Madison Square Garden is Harry’s House.”
“I just went to Venice to spit on Chris Pine, but don’t worry we’re back!” he said as the crowd erupted in cheers.
“Spitgate” was just one of many rumors that the cast of “DWD” had to deal with this year.
Wilde came under pressure last month when she claimed to have fired Shia LaBeouf from the film to protect Florence Pugh – which was later refuted in a leaked video.
Fans suspected this might have been one of the reasons Pugh and Wilde appear to have had a falling out.
However, other people attribute Pugh’s cold demeanor to the romance between Wilde and Styles that developed on set.
