Olivia Wilde doesn’t want Stephen Colbert to be worried about the various rumors surrounding her new movie.
That don’t worry darling Director and actress is a guest on CBS The Late Show on Wednesday ahead of the Warner Bros. film’s release This Friday, where she addressed some of the rumors surrounding the project, starting with Shia LaBeouf.
In early September, LaBeouf came forward and contradicted Wilde’s claims that he had been fired don’t worry darling said he finished the film instead, and provided lyrics and video showing her asking him to stay in the cast.
When asked by Colbert to clarify whether LaBeouf left the film or was fired from the film, Wilde said she was trying to play an intermediary between the actor and her leading lady, Florence Pugh.
“When it became clear that it wasn’t a viable working relationship, I was given an ultimatum,” she told the late-night host. “I chose my actress, which I’m very happy about. Was I angry at the time that we didn’t get it right? Secure. Did information about him later come to light that convinced me that we made the right decision? Absolutely.”
Colbert then pressed her to clarify why LaBeouf believes he quit while she believes he was fired, to which she responded that they both felt like moving on without each other.
Next, the director discussed the so-called “spit-gate” speculation that had surrounded a viral video, prompting social media users to wonder if Harry Styles would co-star during the film’s premiere earlier this month at the Venice Chris Pine had spat film festival.
“Another of our weird rumours, Spit-Gate, that you may have heard of, I think is…” Wilde said before Colbert cut her off.
The host made it clear he wanted to ask Wilde about the fuss and appeared to be reading from his note card: “Did Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine? Why or why not? Support your answer.”
Wilde laughed and replied, “No, he didn’t. But I think it’s a perfect example that people will seek drama wherever they can. Harry actually didn’t spit at Chris…”
Colbert cut her off again to joke, “Only time will tell.”
Pine’s team previously issued a statement strongly denying that Styles spat on him. Additionally, Styles poked fun at the debate during a recent performance at Madison Square Garden.
Finally, Wilde addressed the rumors that she and Pugh were “feuding.”
“I have nothing but respect for Florence’s talent,” she told Colbert. “She is fantastic. She is on the set of her film dune right now, and there’s nothing cooler than a busy actress. I don’t have anything against her for some reason.”
She went on to explain that she finds it interesting that none of her fellow male directors are asked questions about her cast, and the host agreed.
“People would actually be talking about the film itself,” Wilde said. “You are praised for being tyrannical. They can always be researched, but conversations about their actual talent or about the film itself will not be overtaken. That’s something we expect. It’s just very different standards being created for women and men around the world.”
