disability equation deEach October, the US Department of Labor sponsors National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), which celebrates the past and present contributions of American workers with disabilities.

NDEAM 2022 focuses on the important role individuals with disabilities play in a diverse and inclusive American workforce.

Stony Brook University celebrates NDEAM with the following events:

Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution Free demonstration and panel discussion
Thursday, October 6, 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m
HSC, Lecture Hall 2 or via Zoom

Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary in 2020. At this film screening and discussion Learn how a summer camp in the 1970s shaped the disability rights movement.

Inclusive recruitment and hiring: people with disabilities

Moderator: Lin Tiedemann, Office of Equity and Access (OEA)

This session will cover how to engage in an inclusive recruitment process, from writing a job description to interviewing, with a focus on an inclusive and accessible process that aims to increase the pool of applicants for people with disabilities.

Accommodation Inquiries: An Introduction
Thursday, October 13, 11 a.m. via Zoom
Moderators: Karin Martinsen and Natalie Mertens, OEA

The when, why and how of accommodation requests. Participants will learn the legal basics of accommodations under the ADA, how Stony Brook University processes inquiries, manages ongoing accommodations, and best practices for supervisors.
