Mom Making Teen Quit Hobby and Get Job To Pay $2,000 Vet Bill Applauded

A mother-of-three has been praised on social media for getting her 15-year-old daughter to give up a hobby and take a part-time job to pay nearly $2,000 in vet bills.

The woman, who posted her story on Reddit with the handle aitavetcost, explained that the family dog, Pebble, has become seriously ill as a direct result of her daughter’s actions – but she has begun to believe the decision she and her husband made would have to question .

Readers of the Am I the A**hole forum gave the post 15,000 likes in less than 24 hours, and the vast majority of commenters felt the parents were right to put the teen in charge.

The reaction on Reddit may also reflect Americans’ concerns about the cost of veterinary services. A 2019 survey by the American Veterinary Medical Association found that 30 percent of pet owners don’t bring their companion animals for a check-up at least once a year. The main reasons given were that the owners felt the animal was not sick or that they simply did not have any money.

In the Reddit case, the bill was “nearly $2,000 after insurance” when Pebble, the family’s Chihuahua-dachshund mix, needed emergency treatment. He became unwell after spending too long on the patio outside their home during a heatwave when temperatures reached 41C.

The woman wrote: “The deck is locked because there is no shade on the deck. The problem is that Pebble loves the deck because he can watch the cars and people walking on the path behind our house and he can see our neighbor’s chickens.”

She added that Janie, her 15-year-old daughter, is in school later than the rest of the family, so it’s her “responsibility to make sure Pebble is inside, the fans are on, and he’s got water.”

Two weeks ago Janie let Pebble out on the patio but then forgot he was there and went to school.

Her older sister Allie, 18, came home to discover the dog was “passing out on the deck”. She contacted her mother and Pebble was taken to an emergency vet.

He made a “complete recovery” and the mother wrote that Janie was “very calm about what happened because he’s fine,” prompting her parents to punish her by making her pay the “expensive bill.” .

As a result, the teenager was forced to leave the swim team and find a job. She has accused her parents of “ruining her life because of a mistake”.

Redditors had little sympathy for the 15-year-old. 47Harpys conceded it was a mistake, but a mistake that “almost killed a family member”.
