Arizona governor race: Kari Lake still wants debate, Hobbs remains steadfast
PHOENIX – In which Race to be Arizona’s next governorKatie Hobbs spoke to constituents in Tempe on September 20, and Kari Lake held a question-and-answer session in Chandler that same day.
Hobbs, the current Secretary of State for Arizona, spoke to young voters in the state of Arizona on National Voter Registration Day.
In a crowd of reporters she was asked why she didn’t want to go on stage for a formal debate with Republican candidate Lake.
“No one wants the opportunity to have a substantive conversation about the issues more than I do. To be able to contrast my position with hers and show the Arizonans how I would govern versus their lack of solutions and inability to govern. We’ve all seen the spectacle she created in GOP elementary school and it’s clear she’s not ready to engage in that conversation,” Hobbs said.
She was asked about Lake’s tweet, which claimed she wanted to “remove the Pledge, the Anthem and the Constitution from our schools.”
Hobbs said she didn’t see the tweet. When part of the tweet was read to her, she said she had no idea what Lake was talking about.
Noting that Hobbs didn’t want to debate with her, Lake said, “The world isn’t an easy place. And if she can’t stand up and debate with me, then she can’t stand up against the cartels, she can’t stand up against the forces that are working against the people of Arizona. She has to show that she has the courage and comes on this stage. And I want her to know that if she’s watching, Katie, I’ve asked the Clean Elections Committee to keep that deadline open until the debate begins. If you find the courage to debate with me, I am more than willing to debate with you.
At Lake’s event, her campaign manager asked her questions about the border, education, and abortion, among many other topics. She also answered questions from reporters at the end of the evening.
