iPhone 14 Pro Max loses fastest download speed crown

Last fall when the iPhone 14 Pro Max was launched, it took the top spot for download speed in many surveys beating out competitors like Samsung’s Galaxy S22 smartphone. As it turns out, in a new report, the iPhone 14 Pro Max lost the download speed crown to two Android devices.

Ookla has published a new mobile performance report comparing the top US carriers when it comes to download and upload speeds, accuracy, availability, and more.

Another interesting comparison in the test is to see how the most popular phones in the United States scored in Q4 for download / upload speed and latency.

While the iPhone 14 Pro Max won the crown for speed in Q3 with an average download speed of 147 Mbps and a download speed of 17 Mbps, the tables have turned in the latest Ookla survey.

Another interesting part about the iPhone 14 Pro Max losing its crown for the fastest download speed is that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 won with the same performance we saw from the 14 Pro Max in Q3.

The average download speed of the iPhone 14 Pro Max went from 147 to 133 Mbps which allowed the Fold4 and Pixel 7 Pro to grab one and two spots.

Since we have seen the iPhone 14 Pro Max perform as quickly as these two Android smartphones, the possibility is that between Q3 and Q4, more 14 Pro Max smartphones have made it into the hands of customers in more regions with careful photography.

Another source said that, at launch, the number of iPhone 14 Pro Max users may be higher in metro areas which may skew the download speed upwards for Q3 before leveling off in Q4.

In any case, all major smartphones between Apple, Samsung, and Google offer strong download speeds with average performance between 125 and 147 Mbps in the Ookla test.
