Houston’s picture-perfect FotoFest returns with a showcase of can’t-miss, cutting-edge works

The arrival of fall weather may be a bit delayed, but weekends are increasingly filling up with fun food events. While it may be fun to watch as the Bears and Texans close in on a top-notch draft pick, perhaps the time is better spent at a bar or restaurant consuming something tasty.

Kick-off on Saturday 24 September at Eight-row flint in the heights. The popular patio bar invited Goode Co. to showcase their Tex-Mex restaurant Kitchen & Cantina with a neighborhood food and drink collaboration. Goode Co. plans to open the new restaurant in the former Down House by the end of October.

Inspired by the friendship between Levi Goode, President of Goode Co., and Morgan Weber, co-owner of Eight Row, the event will feature dishes like carnitas cooked in a copper cazo, a whole roast pig and grills from the Kitchen & Cantina- Menu. Eight Row is already serving up its version of Goode Co.’s watermelon mezcal margarita — “It’s not easy for me, going to east San Antonio or wherever that place is,” Weber jokes — which it’s alongside his other margaritas and ranch Waters will serve .

“We’ve been looking at elevations for the last five years, maybe longer,” Levi Goode, president of Goode Co., tells CultureMap. “Really how it developed. It definitely still has the history and charm of what the Heights has always been. Lots of quality [restaurants] in the neighborhood, with Morgan and his group Agricole being the pioneers.”

“I’ve always appreciated that the menus have that real frontier culture flavor that you don’t see at your regular Tex-Mex place with enchilada, rice and beans,” adds Weber of Kitchen & Cantina. “I think the synergy between Goode Co. and the ethos that they have is going to be really fun. I think that will go down well in the neighborhood.”

The event takes place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Expect freebies and music by Mason Creager alongside food and drinks.

Let’s turn to Sunday julep, Alba Huerta’s James Beard Award-winning cocktail bar on Washington Avenue, celebrates National Bourbon Heritage Month with its first-ever Bourbon Fest. The event runs from 4pm to 7pm and features tastings, cocktail classes, light snacks and live music.

Bar and sandwich shop in Midtown winnies celebrates its first birthday this Sunday with a drag brunch from 11am to 3pm, followed by a kitchen and bar takeover from 5pm to 10pm, featuring food from Executive Chef Chris Shepherd and former Underbelly pastry chef Hospitality, Victoria Dearmond, and Reserve 101 beverages.

The drag brunch features performances by Queen Persephone and friends, and a raffle for a vintage 1971 Honda dirt bike remodeled by local artist Mac the Sign Painter. The bike features a “hand-welded electrical line muffler, extensive black spray paint, and lots of bale wire and electrical tape,” according to a press release. Winnie’s co-owner Graham Laborde tells CultureMap it’s a great ride.

$25 of proceeds from raffle tickets will benefit the Southern Smoke Foundation.

Shepherd and Dearmond will be making their first public appearances since leaving Underbelly Hospitality earlier this summer. The menu includes a smoked bologna sandwich with pickled onions, BBQ and cheddar mayonnaise on white bread; a cha ca “taco” salad with turmeric yogurt fish, herbs and pickled onions in a sesame cracker bowl; and a Carrot Cake Fried Pie with carrot cake and cream cheese icing, wrapped in batter and deep fried.

“I’ve loved Winnie’s since they first opened and I’ve loved sandwiches my whole life,” Shepherd said in a statement. “When they approached me about celebrating their birthday to benefit Southern Smoke, of course I said HELL YEAH.”

The Reserve 101 team — bar manager Josh Alden, general manager Justin Ware and co-owner Sean Fitzmaurice — will be serving a range of drinks including a frozen penicillin and, for whiskey lovers, an ice sled for shooting high-end bourbons.

“Winnie’s has always been about having fun with friends, so we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate our first birthday than by inviting some of them to help us celebrate,” added Laborde. “Not to mention we’ve always been very supportive of Southern Smoke and everything they do, so it just made sense to tie the event to that.”
