Grace Cathedral Names Iconic New York and Paris-based Artist Lee Mingwei as 2022 Artist in Residence

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Grace Cathedral continues to build on her vision of a spiritually vibrant world and today announced that celebrated Taiwanese-American contemporary artist Lee Mingwei is her 2022 Artist in Residence. Known for creating extraordinary participatory installations, Mingwei’s work infuses ritual and beauty into which strangers can explore themes of trust, intimacy, and self-awareness.

As Grace Cathedral’s 2022 Artist in Residence, Mingwei will reflect on the Year of Connection and share its story and inspiration at cornerstone events such as Yoga on the Labyrinth, The Forum, Choral Eucharist Service and Our maze for grace, the culmination of his residency. The Forum at Grace Cathedral: Lee Mingwei

The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young will conduct a personal interview with Mingwei Solo on October 2nd about how his life influences his work and on October 9th with the dancers who performed Our maze for grace about the creation of the work, how it feels to perform it and how the work has evolved over time and space.

Yoga on the maze

Tuesday, October 4, 2022, 6:15 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.; $15

Surrounded by the stunning architecture of Grace Cathedral and set to live music by world-renowned musicians, this weekly yoga and meditation practice looks and feels like the amazing diversity of San Francisco itself. Mingwei will give intent at the start of the practice and over address the theme of the evening of atonement and renewal.

Artist in Residence Talk with de Young Curator-in-Charge Claudia Schmuckli

Thursday, October 6, 2022 at 6:30 p.m.; Free

The de Young Museum will present the first retrospective of Mingwei’s career in 2024. Claudia Schmuckli, curator in charge of contemporary art and programming for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, will talk to Mingwei about his roots in the Bay Area and the development of his work.

Our maze for grace

Saturday, October 8, 2022, 12 p.m. – midnight; $20

The highlight of his stay will be Our labyrinth for grace, an epic 12-hour performance by three dancers, with opening music by the men and boys of the Cathedral Choir and a finale by organist Susan Jane Matthews. The work was previously carried out at The Center Pompidou in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Tate Modern in London.

Our maze for grace was inspired by Mingwei’s visit to a Buddhist temple in Myanmar, where he saw volunteers sweeping the paths quietly and slowly. It was a gift they gave to the community, but also to themselves – to be able to perform a purification ritual, but also to give visitors a clear path to walk on.

Choral Eucharist

Sunday, October 9, 11 a.m.; Free

The Cathedral’s main Eucharist, with hymns and worship music sung by the Cathedral Choir. (60-75 minutes). This marks the end of Mingwei’s 2022 residency as Grace Cathedral’s Artist in Residence. After the service, there will be a celebratory coffee hour to say farewell.
