A day after M&M’s canceled its “talking candy” amid backlash from Fox News hosts who no longer find them sexy, the conservative cable giant has found its new target of outrage: ” wake up” video game consoles with power saving features.
Earlier this month, Microsoft announced that Xbox will offer “carbon-conscious game downloads and updates” as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and help tackle climate change.
“For example, instead of your Xbox waking up during the nighttime recovery window at a random time between 2:00 a.m. – 6:00 a.m., the console will wake up when it can use the most energy to renewables in your home energy grid,” said the company, adding: “This reduces dependence on fossil fuels and CO2 emissions, and can save you money.”
But because the right-wing propaganda machine needs constant feeding, the conservative media and Republican politicians used to declare this as the latest battle in the never-ending culture war.
“First gas stoves, then your coffee, now they’re shooting for your Xbox,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who seems more interested in being a right-wing ideologue than a congressman, tweeted on Monday. (For those who don’t know, conservatives have lost their minds recently about future regulations on gas appliances, bold enough to “come and get them.”)
It didn’t take long, of course, for Fox News to jump on the faux-fury bandwagon. Having a ball, the network’s digital newsroom published a segment Monday night promoting conservative critics who “spoiled” the “woke brigade” to get behind video games.
During the Tuesday morning broadcast Fox & Friends FirstFox Business anchor Cheryl Casone grumbled that “some executives at Microsoft think this is a good idea” before reading off a series of tweets from the right-wing influence mocking and zealous.
“Expert! Is that the best word?!” Fox & Friends First co-worker Todd Piro stated. “I really stand by this language. Carbon know?! I’ve known carbon most of my growing up life. It is very important.”
The next hour, however, Fox News warned viewers that Big Climate Change is coming to their children because the video game system has a new power saving function.
“Xbox also announced that they will also wake up due to climate change,” Fox & Friends Host Ainsley Earhardt explains. “That they add new features to their old settings. If you own an Xbox you can download this new program, and it will turn off after a long time to save the environment.”
Fox News host Jimmy Failla then sounded the alarm about children being targeted by left-leaning corporations for climate control.
“We understand what this is,” said the conservative comedian. “It’s not that emissions are actually going to be turned off, then — the level of reduction is infinite. But they’re trying to get your kids involved in climate politics at an early age; make them aware of the current climate.”
“You’re right,” Earhardt agreed. “They’re after the kids.”
Not to be outdone, Fox News contributor Marc Thiessen weighed in on Cruz by slamming Microsoft’s decision with other recent culture war complaints.
“They want to tell you how to live your life. We’ll say ‘No, you’re not going to drive a tow truck and no, you’re not going to have a gas stove, you’re going to have an electric stove.’ ” he said on Fox News. It’s more. “Because every building in New York City can’t afford gas anymore, right? This thing is actually happening. If climate extremists want to get rid of Gen Z, the best way to do it is to get rid of Their Xbox!”
