COLUMN: A Fall Fashion Report: Everything’s Cropped

With fall approaching and swimsuits disappearing from the shelves at Savers to make way for sweaters, it’s important to know what the cool kids are wearing so you can keep up with trends and pretend to live your life is still important. That’s why I have to inform you that this week I saw my first guy in a crop top on campus.

Given that we’re about six years behind the shores with trends here in the Midwest, I should hesitate to say that this is an innovative style. But here, in the land where jean shorts and polo shirts outlast the persistence of a prehistoric crustacean: It is so. And so, to that first male presenter in a crop top: Greetings.

A day later, however, I realized that my delight at seeing someone masculine wearing a crop shirt on a casual stroll needed to be tempered, and so perhaps menswear had taken a smaller step than I’d thought. But still. crop top

As of this writing, students are just beginning to move into their dormitories, so the full fashion report is yet to come. But after that morning walk, I can add two mustaches and a man bun (can we still call it a man bun?) to the list. Also for a feminine person: overall shorts. And while I haven’t seen it on campus yet, I know from selling it on Marketplace that young people are buying vintage sweatshirts with little butterflies and flowers on them — sweatshirts that used to be the domain of 50-year-old third-grade teachers with helmet hair are now the provenance of the super cool. Good to know.

I had a pair of jumpsuit shorts in the 90’s. I’ve worn them a lot. A LOT OF. I wore them until a guy I liked but was too cool for me and ended up ALWAYS on TV even now – a fact I wish I had known before I decided to like him – said, “Wow, you really like those shorts.” And I don’t think I’ve ever worn them again because I’m 78% shame – a problem today’s youth don’t seem to have. Good for you.

A young female who I mistakenly assumed was a student living in the dorms just came to my house in a lovely Subaru (probably not a student, silly!) to pick up a Marketplace thing, and she wore a yellow shirt. Is yellow a cool color now? I do not know. Maybe she was just wearing a yellow shirt. She graduated in 2020 so she certainly knows more than I do. In any case, she is not old enough to be despised for simply continuing to exist. I look to these people for clues.

Scanning my surroundings the other day, I saw a male presenter riding an electric skateboard up the very steep university hill. When I was closer to her age, grown men (persons) in suits rode Razor scooters to their Wall Street jobs, and it was pretty stupid. But it was a trend, a trend that will eventually become stupid, but not today because the future is now.

Get your scissors and cut your t-shirts in half. It’s a new day and it’s time for a change.
