Cerenergy is a fire and explosion proof battery that does not contain lithium, graphite, copper or cobalt.

Altech Chemicals (ASX: ATC) spent most of the three months to the end of September focusing on developing high-capacity sodium aluminate batteries for grid storage.

In the company’s quarterly report, he outlined the recent achievements in improving the technology, including establishing a business partnership with the German company Fraunhofer IKTS.

Fraunhofer is a well-known battery materials and operations research center that has been developing the Cerenergy battery for the past eight years.

It has spent over US$54.4 million on research and development and US$38.8 million on a pilot plant in Hermsdorf to test the technology.

Cerenergy’s powerful concept uses common table salt to create a future battery that is free of lithium, graphite, copper and cobalt.

Silumina anodes pilot plant

Altech also spent time during the quarter on pre-built projects in the pilot project for sillumina anodes at Germany’s Schwarze Pumpe spa in Saxony.

The company said that the purchase of the equipment was too late and that the order for the products had been made for a long time.

The required structural repairs and panel installation began in July and detailed design including commissioning and documentation is approaching.

Altech has started work on a positive research that can be done for 10,000 tons per year which will run parallel to the construction of the factory.

The pilot plant will produce 120 kilograms per day of silicon anode, which will be sent to select end users for product testing.

The game-changing technology of the Altech silumina anode is considered Saxony’s biggest industrial development project.

The company said the increased interest in batteries by European car manufacturers has led to increased political and economic support.

Provide a cell phone bag battery

Altech has expanded its research and development laboratory in Perth during this period to enable the production of a bag size battery to advance to the next stage of the Silumina anodes process.

The indoor facility will allow the company to experiment and test the power dissipation conditions in which the cell is required to operate outside of the current low voltage.

Physical and environmental stress conditions (where the cell is subjected to extreme temperature or mechanical stress) can also be tested.

HPA financial performance

Financial negotiations continue during Altech’s Malaysian high purity alumina (HPA) project.

German credit agency Euler Hermes has renewed its US$170 million credit facility for a US$190 million senior credit facility from German-owned KfW IPEX-Bank.

It was followed up with a second financing deal through a US$144 million green bond offering with London-based agent Bedford Row Capital.

American global investment bank DelMorgan and Co committed to securing a commitment of US$100 million in operating finance.
