The Italian Trade Agency (ITA) in Hong Kong is bringing 20 eyewear brands to the city to showcase the country’s expertise in design and craftsmanship.
Italy’s exceptional heritage of history, culture and art spans thousands of years. The Mediterranean country is a veritable treasure trove of treasures, from the artifacts of Etruscan civilization and ancient Rome scattered across the peninsula, to the Renaissance artworks and sculptures of Leonardo and Michelangelo, to the sublime music of Vivaldi, Verdi and Puccini and the down-to-earth, groundbreaking works of the great 20th-century film directors such as Antonioni, Fellini, Pasolini, and Visconti. In fact, Italy is so rich in culture that the country’s historic sites account for around 60 percent of the world’s artistic heritage, according to Unesco.
This endless accumulation of art and culture has inevitably exerted a powerful influence. The globally recognized “Italian touch” so evident in craftsmanship and design – whether in fashion, furniture, cars or eyewear – is further evidence of this outstanding heritage.
Take glasses for example. The Italians invented the lens in the 14th century, and although the authorship of the original invention is unclear, Angelo Frescura is often credited with being the first to industrialize eyewear production. After he started making glasses in Cadore in the 1870s, many Cadorini followed him and the area of northern Italy soon became a cradle of glasses production. Almost a century and a half later, Italy is the undisputed leader in the eyewear market, dictating global trends.
To celebrate this heritage and the long history of eyewear production, the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) works with 20 brands to promote Italian art and design and its influence on the modern luxury sector. Check out the line-up at the link below.
